Building the ship chaboo for Evan B Harris has been like wrestling an alligator. I know they say everything has been done but im pretty confident on this one. No one has every built a CURVED toy pirate ship onto/into a piece of furniture! If someone has seen it, send me a picture and ill stand corrected.
Making these lap joints is painfully complicated because of the irregular shape. Every part must line up correctly with each other and the chaboo. Im routing out the channels for the joints with my Festool router/guide rail setup. The setup is great for awkward situations… which I seem to attract both in woodworking and socially.
I bought two big slabs of Swiss Pearwood today at a garage sale…. even though I have no use for it!!!! Im such an idiot. I saw these beautiful pieces of wood and I just couldnt let it go…
At least I got a screaming deal at $250 for both. 2″ thick, 8ft long. The look nice bookmatched. Maybe someday itll be two nice benches or a huge dining table with a glass top or some kind of filler material for the inside. Or better yet- a conference table for MY office. Make something nice for myself for once!
Pear trees just dont grow that big. These slabs are rare beauties. They have a warm orangish tone with some pink in there. Whew.. my heart is pounding.
